Fred Davis – Waking Up
Fred Davis – Waking Up
I’ve heard it stated so many times by so many different spiritual teachers that there aren’t any specific techniques that will work consistently in getting a student to self-realization. They say waking up happens ‘by the grace of God’ or you’re either ready or you’re not ready based on your karmic debt. Or those that awaken were ready to, based on previous lifetimes of spiritual practice. These teachers will tell you that you need to meditate more or at least meditate better. Or should do more service work for the poor to lighten your karma. Or how about chanting endless mantras or continually ask yourself inquiry questions like ‘who am I’ or ‘who’s thinking this thought’. Sound familiar?
You can’t really fault most of these gurus for teaching what they do. Most of them reached enlightenment through one of these methods (or something similar) and so that’s what they know. And they teach what they know. And in the enlightened state, you’re not too motivated to learn new ways to wake up, because you’re already there.
Please don’t misunderstand, there’s nothing wrong with doing spiritual practices. They can help loosen up the ridged 3D energy around the seeker and make awakening easier on them when it happens. I recommend that any serious student at the very least start meditating, if they’re not doing so already. And there are many more spiritual practices that one can do to help prepare one for awaking. Some of them are talked about elsewhere on this website. I’m reminded of a phrase that Rick Archer (Buddha at the Gas Pump pod cast) likes to often quote; “Awakening may be an accident, but there’s nothing wrong with being accident prone”.
The truth about enlightenment is that you’re going to wake up eventually anyways. You can wait till your last breath on this earth and cross over to the other side and remember who you really are, or you can wake up while you’re still here and remember who you really are. It’s your choice. I’m guessing if you’ve made it this far on this website, you’re in the latter category. Any
ways, here’s my awaking story.
Starting at the age of 16, I had been meditating or doing some form of spiritual practice, and I still hadn’t reached spiritual enlightenment. Sure, I was gradually losing the voice in my head (ego) and there had been plenty of dramatic and some milder spiritual experiences. My emotions were much calmer and my thinking much clearer. But I still ‘knew’ I was this mind and I was this body and I had a past and a future. No matter how many Non-duality books I read or how many Adyashanti CD’s I listened to, I just couldn’t get past the little me that I knew myself to be. And then along came Rick Archer and his pod cast Buddha at the Gas Pump.
Rick Archer – Buddha at the Gas Pump
If you have never heard Rick interview his enlightened guests then you need to get over to his website (or YouTube channel) and check it out. Rick is a natural at bringing out the best in his guests and introducing them to the world of spiritual seekers. I listened to about 30 or so interviews before Rick had this interesting fellow on his show named Fred Davis. As I listened to the interview I was captivated with what this guy was claiming. He said that he had the ability to wake a person up, Self-realization. And he could do it in person, over the phone, or via Skype. I’m thinking to myself; ‘Is this guy for real’?
Now I can be kind of skeptical, and since I had never heard of any reproducible technique that will get a person through the gateless gate, I thought perhaps I should read this guy’s book first before making an appointment with him. His book is called ‘The Book of Undoing’ and its available from Fred’s website or from Amazon.
‘The Book of Undoing’ is unique in the world of non-duality. It’s practical, down to earth, and actually teaches a technique that can help a person remember who they really are. He calls he’s technique Direct Pointing and it’s sort of like someone doing ‘inquiry on steroids’ on you. A large part of the book is the transcript of what a Direct Pointing session could be, although it’s not any one particular session that he’s done. Many of his readers have indicated that they have had an awakening experience just reading the book. I am one of them. It was a minor experience that lasted only a few seconds, but I saw my true nature for the first time part way through the book.
Like everyone who has this experience and loses it, I wanted to get it back. And because it was so short, I wanted to verify that it really happened. So I booked a session with Fred. Fred Davis lives in South Carolina and I live in California so we did a Skype session one Sunday morning. Even though we had internet problems that day we still did the session over the phone.
My Direct Pointing Session
It’s hard to explain how Fred can do what he does. He says it’s different for every person he works with but the technique he uses is basically the same. He kind of boxed me into a corner with his questions until I had no choice but to wake up and see the truth. My first thought was ‘Oh my God, how could I have not seen this before?’ I was in awe on the one hand and a little ashamed for being so blind for so long on the other. My next thought was ‘It’s so simple, so obvious, I’ll never forget this’. Of course about 24 hours later it slipped away and I was back to thinking I was a body and a mind again, but not completely back. Something was different now. There was a lingering knowing that wouldn’t go away.
Probably that most telling sign that you’ve had the first awakening is that you are no longer a Seeker. That ship has sailed and it isn’t coming back. You know who you really are now and there’s no denying it. It’s kind of like you’re Neo in the movie the ‘The Matrix’. If you remember the movie, Morpheus offers Neo the choice between the red pill (the truth) or the blue pill (going back to sleep). You chose the red pill and now you know the truth. Fred Davis is a little different than most gurus, he says this is where his teachings start.
So in answer to the question; is there a technique that can wake a person up, to gain the first stage of enlightenment, the answer is YES! Fred Davis can show you the way to the truth. Fred Davis charges for his sessions because it’s his only income except for a little bit he makes from the sale of his books. So if money is an issue with you, then you can always just keep doing what you’re doing and hope for the best. However, if you are tired of the seeking and you can invest a few dollars in your spiritual growth, Fred Davis just might be the answer you’re looking for.
